A pretty good stereo audience recording, compromised by a couple of clipped sets, a bit of distortion (accompanied by fluctuation in the recording level) during the first few seconds of the tape, and a dropout. The first and last second or two of Covenant Woman are clipped as is the beginning of Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking. There's a a brief dropout during Solid Rock. Dubbed 12/11/97. 100 min. A very good audience recording of an outstanding performance. I'm a little uneasy about the acuracy of the venue, though. The audience sounds receptive and enthusiastic as one might expect from one of the four World Vision International benifits at Civic Auditorium, Santa Monica that started a couple of days later. Additionally, The set order doesn't quite agree with Bjorner's Chronicles. However, Olof attributes No Man Righteous to the 15th in his table so one has to question the accuracy of other entries. Unfortunately, the tape is
compromised by an abrupt clipping of the end of In The Garden. Still well
worth having, if only for the very rare (the only other performance I'm
aware of being on May 7th the following year) No Man Righteous. Dubbed
08/09/96 110 min.
Regarding my suspicions as to the attributed venue, on 10/07/97 John D. Baldwin wrote: "I think I have solved the mystery of the venue for the gospel tape you provided for me through the library, dated by you 11/16/79. It is indeed the last Warfield show, rather than one of the Santa Monica shows. The clue is in Dylan's rap prior to his performance of Solid Rock: "They hold my records so long, you might hear [the song Solid Rock] a month from now, maybe a year from now, but remember, whenever you do, remember you heard it first right here. "Now [illegible] San Francisco is a great town and you know there are a lot of things wrong with it, but there are a lot of people here that we love. And we're gonna miss it, too!" The beginning of the second comment is obscured by audience applause generated by the first comment, but he clearly utters the words "San Francisco." Even if those words were inaudible, the remainder of his comment indicates that this is the final date of the Warfield residency. It would not be appropriate for Dylan to refer to "a lot of things wrong" with a city like Santa Monica, and because he played in Santa Monica for only four days, it seems to me unlikely that he would make a big deal about missing the place at the end of such a short stay. (I'm assuming that the whole tape represents a single concert, which I have no reason to doubt, rather than performances from two or more dates edited together.) As far as the enthusiasm of the crowd is concerned, Paul Williams in his book "Dylan - What Happened?" clearly states that the audiences at the Fox Warfield grew more and more enthusiastic as the residency went on (though Williams apparently did not catch this particular show). It is also very possible that many San Francisco-based "born-again people" found out about the Dylan show, went on the last night to see what the fuss was about, and liked what they heard, although these people clearly do not represent the entire audience." A fair (perhaps a bit muddy) audience recording of an historic performance. An overtly hostile audience, two sermonettes (squeezed between I Believe In You and When You Gonna Wake Up and again between Do Right To Me Baby and Solid Rock), make for a very interesting listen. Rainbow Music Hall Denver, CO 01/22/80 The Songs When He Returns, Man Gave Names To All The Animals, Precious Angel, Slow Train, Walk Around Heaven All Day, Gonna Change My Way Of Thinking, Do Right To Me Baby, Solid Rock, Saving Grace An excellent stereo line recording, Though incomplete and compromised by some clipped sets, this is a remarkable listen. Slow Train, Walk Around Heaven All Day, and Saving Grace are clipped. The Library Patron that donated the tape wrote: "This tape has a "you are there" presence I have rarely heard. The alleged history of this tape is fascinating. It is a line recording but was not recorded by someone working for Dylan or a Dylan enthusuiast. The taper is a sound collector --someone who goes around recording sounds--any kind of sounds. He was driving around in his van and came across a marquee advertising "Bob Dylan". He was curious enough to take his recording equipment into the concert. The story is, that he walked right in while the concert was in progress and plugged right into the board. Being an expert on theses matters he knew just what to do. He pulled his connection anytime he felt someone was watching him which explains the abrupt cuts. Also, he didn't stay for the whole concert. Everything he recorded is here. This was told to me when I acquired this tape some ten years ago. I don't know if the story behind this tape is true, but it is certainly plausable. The separation (Dylan is on the right channel) is reminiscent of the basement tapes and the slight hiss shouldn't detractfrom the enjoyment." Though I'm not particularly enthusiastic about soundboards (most are a tad too sterile for my taste), this tape is a gem. Thanks yet again, Robert! 60 min. Found on The

22nd Grammy Awards Best Vocal Performance 1979 Shrine Auditorium Los Angeles, CA 02/22/80 The Song Gotta Serve Somebody Taken from a VHS video recording of the television broadcast. The beginning of Kenny Rogers' introduction is clipped, with but the last nineteen seconds remaining. The introduction is further compromised by occasional distortion attributable to a variation in tape speed. The first two lines of the first verse of Gotta Serve Somebody enjoy similar glitches. Gotta Serve Somebody is followed by Dylan's brief acceptance speech. To whit: "I, I didn't expect this and want to thank the Lord for it and, most likely I want to also thank Jerry Wexler, Barry Beckett who believed in it. So I thank you." ubbed 01/04/98. There's a rough edit between I'm Going To Keep On Falling In Love and Man Gave Names To All The Animals resulting in the clipping of the end of I'm Going To Keep On Falling In Love. A similar rough edit between Walking Around Heaven All Day and Abraham, Martin And John results in the clipping of the end of the former and the beginning of the latter. Yet another a rough edit falls between When You Gonna Wake Up and In The Garden, once again resulting in the clipping of the end of the former and the beginning of the latter. The beginning of A Couple More Years and the last second or so of Senor are also clipped. There is a brief drop during Man Gave Names To All The Animals. The 15th set (Slow Train) drops out prematurely (was this the result of the of the accident that caused the blackout and ultimately cost two lives?) and the 16th set (Mr. Tambourine Man) is missing entirely. All of which lead me to suspect that this was taken from the Moonlight 2 CD set, AVIGNON, reviewed by MO in DEEP BENEATH THE WAVES vol. 13. The second is a fair, but complete, audience recording. The beginning of I'll Be Your Baby Tonight is clipped as is the end of Dead Man. The taper, who wishes to remain anonymous, was rather disparaging when discussing the quality of the recording and was, at first, reluctant to share it. I suspect that, some where along the line, this was taken from vinyl. Much of the audience interaction between numbers has been edited out (fade out / fade in).
